Weekly Sessions Overview 

Week 1 – July 8
The Interior Journey: Why Looking Inward is a Radical Act
We’ll begin by reflecting on the spiritual life not as retreat, but as resistance. This session explores the role of contemplation, self-examination, and healing as the foundation for effective social change.

Week 2 – July 15
Unlearning Empire: Disrupting False Discipleship
How has Christianity been shaped by power and colonialism? This session explores how the inner journey helps us name and dismantle the false gods of whiteness, patriarchy, and nationalism in our faith practice.

Week 3 – July 22
When the Spirit Speaks: Listening as a Transformative Practice
We’ll explore prayer and discernment not as private rituals, but as tools for collective liberation,tuning our hearts to God’s voice in the cries of the oppressed and the needs of our communities.

Week 4 – July 29
 Embodied Discipleship: Living Outward with Conviction and Care
What does it look like to integrate justice work with a grounded spiritual life? This week centers the call to be the hands and feet of Christ in public, consistent, and sustainable ways.

Week 5 – August 5 
A New Imagination: Forming Communities of Sacred Action
In our final session, we will talk about what we have learned and we’ll reimagine what it means to be the church, not an institution upholding empire, but a Spirit-filled movement committed to compassion, truth, and transformation. There will be a focus on the digital faith spaces that have emerged for such a time as this as well as faith spaces doing subversive action to deal with current crisis in the U.S.

Our guide for the 2025 Summer School season is the author Daniel Wolpert. 
Daniel is a healer and student of spiritual life and has dedicated over 30 years to teaching and leading retreats in psychology, integrative medicine, and spiritual formation. A Presbyterian pastor and Spiritual Director, he is also an accomplished author with numerous books and articles on spiritual life, leadership, and healing.
Before earning his Master of Divinity degree at San Francisco Theological Seminary (SFTS), Daniel worked as a research scientist, psychologist, spiritual director, farmer, teacher, and construction worker. His extensive teaching experience includes positions at the Art of Spiritual Direction Program at SFTS, national ministry conferences, UCLA, UND Medical School, Luther Seminary, and the 5-Day Academy for Spiritual Formation.
Daniel has significantly contributed to the development of contemplative environments and spiritual leadership by building or restoring monasteries, theological schools, and retreat centers across North America. He is the co-founder and former Executive Director of the Minnesota Institute of Contemplation and Healing (MICAH).
His notable publications include “Leading a Life with God: The Practice of Spiritual Leadership” (Upper Room, 2006), “Creating a Life with God: The Call of Ancient Prayer Practices” (Upper Room, 2003), and his most recent book, “Looking Inward, Living Outward: The Spiritual Practice of Social Transformation” (Upper Room, 2024). Daniel divides his time between Seattle and Minnesota, continuing his work in spiritual direction and healing in private practice.
